Avoid illness over the holidays with these at-home remedies

(CBS Tampa Bay) -- Want to make sure your home remedies are fixes and not fakes? Check out these at-home remedies that actually work.

For upper respiratory infections, you can gargle with plain water. Research found that people who attempted that were less likely to get sick.

If you're feeling sick to your stomach or nauseous, check out ginger. One gram of ginger root can help with morning sickness and seasickness.

Got a cough that just won't quit? A 2012 study found that adding just a little bit of honey, 10 grams, to your diet can help get rid of coughing.

As the saying goes, if it's not broken, don't fix it. Try some chicken noodle soup to keep colds away. Chicken soup keeps the inflammation down that triggers cold symptoms.

One other remedy that is less health related, but no less important during the holidays is a fix for dull teeth.

If you want to impress your friends and family with whiter teeth over the holidays but hate to make the trip to the dentist, check out apples and carrots. As you chew, apples and carrots wipe away the surface of your teeth and help to remove stains.
