KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A teacher at Dogwood Elementary School received a big surprise on Monday—a $10,000 scholarship that will go towards paying for a large part of her Master's degree.

The scholarship was awarded by the Western Governors University, which is a private, nonprofit school created to help working adults in Tennessee get advanced degrees.

Teacher Amy Long received one of eights scholarships awarded across the state - being presented with a check in a surprise ceremony at school on Monday morning.

Tuition at WGU costs around $6,000 per year, so the $10,000 scholarship will go a long way towards paying for her degree.
