KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Now that the kids are back in school, they are probably getting loaded down with books.
Notebooks, textbooks, folders, binders... the list goes on and on. And, it all starts to add up.
The American Chiropractic Association recommends that your child's backpack weight no more than 10 percent of their weight. The association said overloaded backpacks can lead to back and shoulder pain as well as poor posture.
Here are a few reminders on what you can do to make sure your kids are overloaded:
- Make sure that they're using all the compartments in the backpack
- Pack the heavier items closes to the center of the backpack
- Go through the backpack with your child weekly and make sure all unnecessary items have been removed.
