KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knox Co. Mayor Tim Burchett invited the community to the Back to School Bash on Monday.
The fifth annual event drew thousands to the Knoxville Expo Center. It was free and open to the public.
Students got free school supplies and health screenings. There was activities, free food, special programs and several other vendors set up, including a petting zoo with animals from the Friendly Farm in Maryville.
"It's very important to me it's not just a budgetary item it's a human thing .. education is the great equalizer between our kids," said Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett.
800-1,000 students showed up just within the first hour of the event.
