tnAchieves reminds TN Promise students of community service deadline

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Students hoping to remain eligible for the TN Promise scholarship this fall have until August 1, 2016, to complete the community service requirement included in the scholarship.

TN Promise offers students up to five semesters at a community or technical college, or at eligible four-year institutions with associate's degree programs.

Each TN Promise recipient works with a volunteer mentor from the program's partner organization tnAchieves, in order to meet deadlines, answer questions, and offer encouragement.

Right now, tnAchieves mentors want to encourage TN Promise students to complete the required eight hours of community service in order to keep their scholarship for the approaching fall semester. Students can volunteer anywhere they'd like, from classrooms, to hospitals, even state parks; they simply must ensure they properly submit their hours no later than midnight CT on August 1.

“We want our students to cultivate a culture of giving back that remains with them throughout their life,” says Krissy DeAlejandro, Executive Director, tnAchieves. “While critical to remaining TN Promise eligible, this provides students with the opportunity to pursue their passions and/or explore potential career paths.”

The deadline applies both to college sophomores who graduated high school in 2015, as well as rising freshmen members of the Class of 2016 who will enter college for their first semester with TN Promise this fall.

Since tnAchieves launched in 2008, students have given back more than 540,000 community service hours. To learn more about volunteer opportunities and how to submit service hours, click on the included link.
