KFD Firefighters Win Big at the TUFF Challenge

Knoxville (WVLT) - The men and women of the Knoxville Fire Department have returned victorious from Tennessee Ultimate Fire Fighter, or "TUFF" Challenge.

A team of five men and, for the first time ever, a team of three women, traveled to bell buckle for the challenge Saturday.

And both teams won!

The challenges simulate what the crew does at a fire and included hose advance, bucket brigade and climbing.

The firefighters say it's hard work.

"It lets us know what we're capable of doing physically," says John Tillett, Master Firefighter with Squad 7. "It shows us what we can do with out jobs and the activities of our job."

But they're already planning for next year.

"The girls have expressed wanting to go back, we've had another girl come forward that she's wanting to try and do it next year, so we're looking forward to that," said Mayme Taylor, Fire Officer with Station 10, and member of the first ever women's team with KFD to enter the contest.

Money raised at the TUFF Challenge goes to the Tennessee Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
