Outbreak of Mono Confirmed at UT-Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- An outbreak of mononucleosis has been confirmed at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Health officials say it's common to see a few cases of the viral ailment each fall, but at least 21 cases have been confirmed at the university. Many other concerned students have been calling nurses.

The flu-like illness can bring on fever, sore throat and swollen glands that don't go away in a week or more.

University health officials say two students who had severe symptoms left campus to recuperate at home.

Officials say the close living quarters in dormitories and classrooms help spread the virus. They advise students not to share food, drink bottles or toiletries.
