Mom and Daughter Team Up at Knoxville Fire Department

Knoxville (WVLT) - A Knoxville mother and daughter won't just fight family battles together. Now they'll fight fires side by side. The Knoxville Fire Department graduated 30 recruits Monday night. Melody Neubert was among them. She'll now join her mother, Vicky Hill, in the department.

Only Volunteer TV's Mike McCarthy spoke with numerous proud family member just after the graduation.

This is exciting. The two will be KFD's first ever mother-daugther pair. Talk about like mother, like daughter. Melody Neubert spent her childhood in the firehouse with her mom. That's exactly why she wants to go back.

With a handshake, a badge, and a picture, firefighter Melody Neubert makes Knoxville history.

"I have some big shoes to fill," Neubert said.

Those belong to her firefighter-mother Vicky Hill.

"I can't say I'll be better than her. I hope so," Neubert said.

The pair marks the first ever mother-daughter duo in KFD's more than 150 year history.

"She's her own little person," Hill said.

A little person now all grown up, Hill describes with just two words.

"Pretty strong," Hill said.

But Neubert says it's her mother strength that got her to say the words her mother spoke nearly 20 years ago.

"Being there, watching her go out on the those calls and seeing people appreciate her for what she's done for them," Neubert said.

Now Neubert will head work at her home-away-from-home as a child. The firehouse.

"We've had many Christmas and Thanksgivings there and many more to come," Neubert said.

So just how tough are they?

"They're a handful. They always have been," Neubert's father, David Hill, said.

Neubert's dad says the only thing bigger than his pride is his daughter's ambition.

"I wouldn't want to go knuckle to knuckle with her," David Hill said.

As exciting as this is, it's not the only first this family's brought to the fire department.

"I was the first grandmother to start out with," Vicky Hill said.

And her grandkids are eager for a diploma of their own.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" Mike asked.
"A firefighter," Dylan Neubert said.

A biological family ready to fight fires with.

"A bunch of brothers and sisters. I consider them my second family," Neubert said.

"I'm happy for the whole class. I hope they do good," Vicky Hill said.

A mother and daughter sharing what they love.

"I just want to put out fires," Neubert said.

Now she can.

Both Neubert and hill will work for the Knoxville Fire Department, but they'll be at different stations. The Fire Department says it's proud and honored to have them on staff, but both mom and daughter stressed they want to share the occasion with the other new graduates. That's because they're also family.
