University of the South Turns 150

SEWANEE, Tenn. (AP) -- Alumni and students celebrated the University of the South's 150th anniversary with the announcement of a $1 million gift.

William and Coquette Barnes of Alexander City, Alabama, made the final pledge in a three-year capital campaign to raise $180 million for the liberal arts college affiliated with the Episcopal Church.

Newsweek editor and 1991 University of the South graduate Jon Meacham challenged the audience at the liberal arts college to recognize Founders' Day by learning from the past.

Meacham, who has a home in the Sewanee area, said people can be inspired by past triumphs.
