Plaques Stolen From Chickamauga Battlefield

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Officials say century-old bronze plaques are missing from the Chickamauga Battlefield.

The Civil War markers were placed by Indiana veterans in 1898 to commemorate their taking part in the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga.

The Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is offering a $1000 reward for information.

Park officials says rangers discovered the plaques missing in September from the monuments of the 42nd and 88th Indiana Infantry Regiments.

Supervisory Park Rangers Jim Staub says the originals are irreplaceable.

Officials aren't sure whether the plaques were stolen because of the value of the metal.
