LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Authorities in California say the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Anna Nicole Smith's death is focusing on several state-licensed doctors and pharmacies.

Speaking at a news conference, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said the probe involves the "prescribing and dispensing practices" of the doctors and pharmacies.

Brown says he launched the investigation in late March after learning that the drugs involved in Smith's February death in Florida were prescribed by California physicians and came from California pharmacies. Smith died of a drug overdose in Florida.

Brown says searches have been carried out in Los Angeles and Orange counties related to doctors "who provided medical treatment or prescribed drugs for Anna Nicole Smith or her associates."

Brown declined to speculate on what charges could be filed.
