One East Tennessee Forest Fire Contained; Others Burning

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- State firefighters contained a wildfire today in Hawkins County.

Spokesman John Henderson said it covered about 250 acres, but no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

There also was a small wildfire today in Cocke County.

A hot and dry summer brought an early start to the forest fire season.

East Tennessee has been hardest hit, with fires burning more than 23,000 acres.

A wildfire yesterday blackened 140 acres in Marion County.

Officials say in a normal year, Tennessee will have 2,800 blazes which will consume about 30,000 acres.

Fires have already burned 41,249 acres statewide.

Burn permits are required statewide.
