How Difficult Is It To Buy Blue Lights?

By  |

Knoxville (WVLT) - It's illegal for anyone to install blue flashing lights inside their vehicle, but it's not difficult to buy them.

It is against state law to own and operate blue flashing emergency lights in your vehicle. Only full time, salaried, uniformed law enforcement officers are allowed to do so. Constables are an exception to this law.

While the law is clear, the selling and distributing of blue flashing emergency lights is not. In fact, anyone can buy the lights from various sources through mail order and online. We attempted to purchase a blue light for less than 40 dollars online and although we were asked for our professional affiliation, we checked "other."

"But as for lights, people buy them for disco booths and everything else. A lot of people will sell it if you come up with the right amount of money," said Robert Dodson of Volunteer Radio.

Violating this law is a Class C Misdemeanor which can carry jail time and fines. Again, if you're not certain of a vehicle that's signaling you to pull over, a real law officer will follow you to the nearest public place.
