Middle Tennessee Sheriff Pleads Not Guilty to Misconduct Charges

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) -- Williamson County Sheriff Ricky Headley pleaded not guilty to official misconduct charges relating to his arrest earlier this year on prescription drug charges.

He is accused in a separate indictment of obtaining at least 1,900 painkillers without a prescription between October 2006 and January 2007 from a Nashville pharmacy.

He has not yet been arraigned for that indictment.

The misconduct charges stem from allegations that he was wearing his sheriff's uniform and drove a country vehicle to get the medication.

His attorney has said that Headley will not resign and will fight the charges.

During his hearing yesterday (Tuesday), a man heckled the sheriff as he left the courthouse and called Headley a hypocrite. A trial date was set for July.
