Wamp: Governor Should Ease Up on Praise For China

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee congressman Zach Wamp says Governor Bredesen might want to ease up on his praise of China.

The Republican lawmaker's column questions whether governors should receive national security briefings before traveling to what Wamp calls "places like China."

Bredesen has been traveling with a state trade delegation in China and Japan and has sent back public dispatches that have been published in several newspapers.

In one over the weekend, the Democratic governor marveled at Shanghai's vibrant commercial district.

Interviewed by the Chattanooga Times Free Press' Washington correspondent, Wamp said China is unworthy of its most-favored-nation trading status with the U.S. because of its record on human rights, political dissent and sabre-rattlling.

A spokeswoman for Bredesen referred questions directly to the governor, who was traveling.
