Marshal Shoots, Kills Fugitive From Prison

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A deputy U.S. Marshal shot and killed a fugitive from a Mississippi jail after the escapee allegedly tried to run over officers trying to capture him in Memphis.

Thirty-two-year-old Michael Smith was shot in the same car that authorities say he stole after escaping from his trustee position at the Hernando jail.

The confrontation happened outside a golf clubhouse at the city's public Overton Park.

Smith had been in the jail for about a year but he was scheduled to be transfered to a state prison in about two weeks to serve the rest of his 10-year sentence on a variety of nonviolent offenses.

Another inmate who escaped was captured in Hernando without incident.
