Did Black Friday Bring Local Retailers Out of the Red?

Knoxville (WVLT) -- Americans spent over $10 billion dollars on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

That is an increase of 8% over last year.

Volunteer TV's Liz Tedone looked into how local retailers did on the kickoff of the holiday shopping season.

The one word to describe local sales this year is competitive.

J.C. Penny's, Kohl's, and Goody's all moved their store hours the day after Thanksgiving to open at 4:00 a.m.

Goody's CEO Chuck Turlinksi says Friday started off a great weekend of sales.

"The trends in the third quarter was a little soft with the warm weather, but the change in the trend with the beginning of the holiday season is very encouraging," he said.
