Family injured in collapse of stairs at Sevier County rental cabin sues

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- Members of a Florida family who were injured last year when the stairway collapsed at their Gatlinburg rental chalet are suing the property's owner.

Thirty-four people were lined up on the outdoor stairway for a family photo when it collapsed. Some people fell as far as 25 feet to the ground, sending 11 people to hospitals.

The suit names A Big Chalet LLC and claims the home's stairway and deck were not designed and built to accommodate the number of people the home could hold. The 12-bedroom chalet is advertised for 27 to 64 people.

The Maslyn family is seeking $345,000 in damages.
