Busiest Mailing Day of the Year

KNOXVILLE (WVLT) - The clock is ticking when it comes to mailing your Christmas cards and gifts out in time for the big day.

Historically, the Monday before Christmas is the busiest day of the year for post offices across the country, so we checked in with the Knoxville office.

Tony Maples with the Knoxville Post Office says, "We're anticipating, of course, record numbers of volume to come through the system today. We normally would collect anywhere from 400-500,000 pieces of mail. Today we're looking at 1.1 million pieces of cards and letters."

Shelly Buchanan mailed gifts on the busiest day of the year and says, "I'm on my lunch break from work. I'm a nurse close by, so I'm hoping I can get through this in a half hour."

Denise Bible mailed cards and says, "This isn't bad. Usually this is worse than this. Usually it goes out the door."

Maples says, "I think we're actually sending more cards than we used to do now."

Bible says, "It's a personal note letting people know that you're thinking about them during the holiday season."

Buchanan says, "I am hoping and praying they will get there by Saturday, but if not, it's the thought that counts.

Maples says, "What we're recommending to customers is that they use priority mail up through December 20th. After December 20th they need to switch over to Express mail."

Shelly says, "I want him to have a happy Christmas!"

The main post office on Weisgarber is open from 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday and 9:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays.
