PETA ranks Tennessee prisons as 8th best for vegetarians

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Animal rights activists have ranked Tennessee as having the eighth most vegetarian-friendly prison system.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, praised Tennessee prisons for offering vegetarian items, such as a vegetarian sweet-and-sour entree, vegetarian chili and vegetarian burgers.

PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich says such options promote inmates' health.

Idaho, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania ranked as the top three states.

Phillip Workman, a death row inmate who was executed in May, requested as his last meal a vegetarian pizza to be given to a homeless person.

Prison officials said they couldn't grant that request, so a PETA donor had 10 veggie pizzas delivered to a Nashville homeless shelter.
