East Tennessee death row inmate gets 25 more years

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Death row inmate Harold Wayne Nichols has been sentenced to 25 more years in prison on top of the 225 he is already serving.

Nichols was convicted in the rape and murder of 21-year-old Karen Pulley in 1990. He is not currently scheduled for execution.

The Tennessee Supreme Court granted his request to be resentenced on multiple rape and burglary convictions for which he was serving a combined 225 years, in addition to his death sentence.

But Judge Jon Blackwood declined to make Nichols' new sentences run consecutively, which would have added another 188 years.

The judge says he expects Nichols to be executed eventually, ruling out the need for such a longer sentence.
