Blount deputies arrest Knox bank robbery suspect

Chessie Adam Ayers, 19, is charged with forgery, but may face charges in connection with two Knoxville bank robberies.

MARYVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) Blount County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man suspected in two Knoxville bank robberies, and possibly a robbery in Atlanta.

FBI Special Agent Mike MacLean confirms Chessie Adam Ayers, 19, of Friendsville, is a suspect in connection with the robberies of a First Tennessee Bank branch on North Broadway on November 3rd, and December 1st.

MacLean says he is not wanted for the Citizens Bank robberies inside the Food City on Morrell or the BB&T on Northshore Drive.

Blount County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Marian O'Briant says Ayers was taken into custody during a traffic stop on Monday night.

During the course of the traffic stop, O"Briant says several credit cards and personal checks belonging to other individuals were found on Ayers.

He's been charged with forgery, and may face other charges in Sweetwater.

The van he was driving when he was stopped, was stolen.

Ayers allegedly admitted to stealing it in Sweetwater.

In addition to the stolen van, a 2001 Chevrolet pick-up truck that was allegedly stolen by Ayers from a victim in Blount County was recovered in Sweetwater.

As he was being interviewed by deputies last night, O'Briant says Ayers implicated himself in Knoxville and Atlanta bank robberies.

Agent MacLean says FBI agents are still investigating the Atlanta claim.

Ayers is being held on a $3,000 bond and is expected to be in court tomorrow.

Federal charges are pending.
