Contractor set to start cleanup of West Knox illegal landfill

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- It could take several thousand more dollars on top of the fifty thousand already spent to clean up a stinky, smoldering dump in West Knox County, and you're paying for it.

Monday morning, Knox County hired Renfro Construction to take over clean-up duties at an illegal landfill on Tedford Drive.

Bruce Wuethrich tells Volunteer TV News that it appears the fire is way back underneath the pile and bigger equipment is needed to get to it.

The cost to clean up the site will be between $800 and $1,000 an hour and may take a while.

"I don't know how far back under the pile it is but its quite a ways under there," says Wuethrich, Knox County's Director of Engineering and Public Works. "We just need some equipment that can move alot of dirt in a short period of time."

Renfro Construction plans to start work tomorrow.
