State education commissioner leaving for Miss. foundation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- State Education Commissioner Lana Seivers is leaving her current position to lead a new educational foundation in Mississippi.

Seivers, who was appointed in January 2003, will retire from state service on Feb. 1.

Seivers will lead the as-yet unnamed foundation in Jackson, Miss., that will be dedicated to early childhood, teacher quality and community engagement and leadership.

Gov. Phil Bredesen thanked Seivers for her service, citing her role in raising teacher pay above the Southeastern average and for expanding the state's public pre-kindergarten program.
