TVA sets power demand record 3rd time this winter

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Valley Authority has set its third power demand record this winter.

TVA spokesman Gil Francis says the new mark was set Friday morning, when the average temperature across the seven-state region hovered at a bone-chilling 17 degrees.

Knoxville-based TVA, the country's largest public utility, said preliminary estimates showed power demand exceeding 32,000 megawatts -- the most ever for TVA in winter.

That topped 31,854 megawatts on Jan. 3, which broke a record set the day before.

TVA's all-time peak power high remains the air conditioner-driven 33,482 megawatts set Aug. 16.

TVA serves about 8.7 million consumers in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.
