Man charged with stealing 6 cows from neighbor

ATHENS, Tenn. (AP) -- Investigators have charged a man with stealing six of his neighbor's Holstein cows, loading them on a borrowed trailer and then trying to sell them at a stockyard in Athens.

Bradley County Sheriff's Department spokesman Bob Gault says 20-year-old Brandon Blankenship of Cleveland remained in custody Monday following his arrest Wednesday on charges of theft over $1,000, criminal trespassing and a probation violation.

Records show Blankenship made contact with someone associated with Athens Stockyard on Tuesday about dropping off cows for an upcoming sale. Investigators obtained a stockyard ticket that was originally signed "Brand" before that was scratched out and a false company name used.

Ron Calfee identified his cows and took them home.
