Gun found in student's backpack at Carter High School

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- A Carter High School student was arrested around 3 p.m. Friday, after school resource officers found him in possession of a loaded gun on campus, according to Knox County Schools spokerperson Russ Oaks.

Oaks confirms a .380 pistol with two rounds in the magazine was found in a student's backpack. There were no rounds in the chamber.

Oaks says the student had moved a car on campus without permission, and while school resources officers were questioning him, they searched his locker and backpack, and found a gun in the backpack.

The case has been turned over to the Knox County Sheriff's Office for possible prosecution. Spoesperson Martha Dooley has not yet returned a call seeking comment.

The 16 year old faces expulsion under the district's zero tolerance policy, says Oaks.
