Oak Ridge Police turn to texting to solve crimes

OAK RIDGE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Forget the phone call. You'll soon be able to get in touch with the Oak Ridge Police Department through a text message.

Beginning friday, you can text the Oak Ridge Police Department with information on crimes.

A cell phone is set up to receive texts at the city's dispatch center which is monitored by public safety dispatchers.

For two weeks, the Oak Ridge Police have also posted "Most Wanted" videos on YouTube.

Two people have been arrested thanks to the web.

Officers say the text messaging is an easy and anonymous way to help fight crime in your community.

The number to text crime tips is (865) 755-ORPD or 6-7-7-3.

Officers say this number is for text messages only, not calls or emergencies.
