FBI investigating Blount County girl's rape on cruise ship

MARYVILLE, Tenn (AP) -- The FBI is investigating the alleged rape of a 12-year-old Blount County girl on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship.

The girl's grandmother told The Daily Times in Maryville that she was raped by a 23-year-old man and left drunk and alone in a hallway last November. The newspaper did not name the grandmother to protect the girl's identity.

Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz confirmed that authorities were investigating an allegation of sexual assault involving a minor female guest and an adult male guest during that trip.

The grandmother says the 12-year-old had planned to go back to her cabin briefly with other girls her age when she was assaulted.

The ship's doctor examined the girl and local authorities boarded the ship at its next stop in St. Maarten. The FBI followed up when the ship returned to Florida. No charges have been filed.
