2 killed on Arizona highway amid whiteout conditions

PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities in Arizona say a blinding snowstorm and unsafe driving led to a huge pile-up that's left two people dead.

Ten other people were seriously hurt in the accident that forced the closure of Interstate 40 near Flagstaff for 20 miles in both directions yesterday.

Rescuers used hydraulic equipment and hand tools to pry some people from the wreckage.

Nearly four inches of snow fell in the area and the National Weather Service says there were off-and-on whiteout conditions.

The initial cause of the pile-up is believed to be a passenger vehicle traveling too fast and losing control, leading to a chain-reaction crash. The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the weather was only a contributing factor.
