McIntyre accepts position as new Knox Schools Superintendent

Knoxville (WVLT) - Knox County Schools have a new superintendent pending contract negotiations.

The board voted 5-4 in favor of James McIntyre, a chief operating officer for Boston Public Schools.

Volunteer TV's Liz Tedone has been following this story and has the latest.

James McIntyre has a reputation for spending a lot of time in the classrooms. He has two young sons, 5 and 8 years old, and tells me he's excited to come to Knox County.

"I think this board will support our superintendent 100 percent," school board chair Karen Carson said.

In a 5-4 vote, the school board names dr. James McIntyre the next superintendent of Knox county schools. It ultimately came down to McIntyre and current assistant superintendent bob thomas for job.

"I looked at his ability to work with people, and I watched him during the interviews, and as I watched Bob Thomas too, they were so close, there were so many things that were so close," Carson said.

But in the end, Carson would cast the deciding vote for McIntyre.

"It's always always hard not going with an internal candidate who you trust, respect and you know has an absolute passion for these kids," Carson said.

Although a Chief Operating Officer for Boston Public Schools, Dr. McIntyre's reputation is in the classrooms. During on-site visits last week, board members learned about his leadership style and say they're impressed with his ability to relate to everybody. On the phone, Dr. McIntyre shared his excitement about the news.

"I'm delighted to be able to lead that effort, and look forward to working with the board, parents, the community and the terrific staff in Knox County Schools to get us there," McIntyre said.

McIntyre was quick to say he doesn't think the Knox County School system needs repair.

"I think there's a great interest in educating children well in Knox County, and I think there's a great track record in doing so," McIntyre said.

Pending contract negotiations, McIntyre says he anxious for his wife and sons to call Rocky Top home.

Dr. McIntyre tells me he plans to wrap up his affairs in Boston and move his family here by early summer. Contract negotiations are now underway.
