A Super Saturday for stimulus recipients

KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Annie Moore filed her taxes for the first time in nearly two decades on Saturday.

She was among the hundreds of Knoxville residents that tallied up their taxes in spite of not owing a dime.

They were all doing it thanks to the economic stimulus payments that the government is getting ready to send out.

“I got a letter from social security and they said I could do it," said Moore, who claims she really needs the money. “It could help me a lot.”

The Knoxville grandmother was like dozens of others who gathered at the L.T. Ross Center on “Super Saturday” for some tax help.

According to Sherion Holmes from the IRS, those who attended the event were mostly, “low income workers along with recipients of social security benefits, and disability benefits."

For three hours, they filled out 1040-A forms with help from the experts.

By doing so, they should each get an economic stimulus payment.

"It ranges from $300 to $600 for single filers and $600 to $1,200 for joint filers," said Holmes.

If you qualify for the payment, all you have to do is file a tax return, even if you haven’t in a long time.

So on Super Saturday, the IRS set up 320 offices around the nation, including seven in Knoxville.

"We want to make it as easy for them as possible and have a location for them to go to," said Holmes.

It was a blessing for Moore, who is plagued by arthritis, chronic asthma and heart problems.

“Times are hard here with me,” she said, “I mean really hard. It's rough here."

For trained tax volunteers, such as Donna Hottinger, helping people like Moore complete their taxes is a great feeling.

"You feel responsible that everything that has been completed correctly, so these people can get their money."

"I just got joy and happiness from talking with different people," said Moore, who should receive her money in a few weeks.

The IRS plans to start mailing checks in May, and if you choose direct deposit, you should get your money faster.
