Bill would make animal fighting a felony

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Legislation that would stiffen the penalty for animal fighting is advancing in the Senate.

The measure sponsored by Murfreesboro Republican Bill Ketron unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. The companion version is scheduled for the same committee in the House on Wednesday.

Currently, it's a misdemeanor for a person to train an animal for the purpose of fighting another animal for amusement, sport or gain. Ketron's bill would make such an act a felony.

He says the proposal is particularly aimed at cockfighting, which is popular in Tennessee.
