Alligator found in drain pipe in Tennessee

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Putnam County animal control officers say they get their fair share of unusual calls, though they didn't know what to make of one about an alligator in a Cookeville drain pipe.

Turns out, it was true.

Officer Chris Brown said when children in the neighborhood first heard a growling noise coming from the drain, they thought it was a dog.

But when officials arrived on the scene, they discovered an alligator at least two-feet long.

Brown believes someone had the gator for a pet, then turned it loose.

He said the alligator was handed over to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, which had to put it down due to the cost of trying to return it to a natural habitat.
