Man who had gun at East Tennessee jail sentenced

MCMINNVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A drunken driving suspect who twice denied he had a weapon before a gun was found in his pocket at the Warren County Jail has been sentenced.

Jackie Ewton had to forfeit the pistol that jailers in McMinnville found as he was being booked, but a judge dropped a charge of trying to bring a weapon into the jail.

Sheriff Jackie Matheny said he doubts Ewton was intentionally trying to smuggle in the gun.

Ewton didn't have a concealed carry permit, which would have allowed him to carry a concealed weapon outside the jail.

Police said Ewton told the arresting officer he wasn't armed and later told jailers the same thing.

He was arrested for DUI after a traffic crash that cause him a back injury.

Ewton was sentenced last week to serve seven days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence for DUI.
