Tennessee unveils plans for "Big Orange Blast"

Three-time Grammy Nominee Pat Green to Headline Event

The University of Tennessee Athletics Department in conjunction with IMG College/The Vol Network will host the second annual “Big Orange Blast” on Thursday, Sept. 18 in World’s Fair Park.

“Tennessee has a tremendous fan base,” said Mike Hamilton, men’s athletics director. “This event is a great opportunity for us to get into the community and celebrate the start of football season with the fans that fill our stadium every week.”

Three-time Grammy Nominee Pat Green will be the featured performer at the second annual “Big Orange Blast.” Festivities begin at 7 p.m. Tennessee Head Football Coach Phillip Fulmer and select members of the Tennessee football team will participate with the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, UT cheerleaders and Smokey at a pep rally at 7:45 p.m. Advance tickets are available at www.utbigorangeblast.com or at the University of Tennessee Book and Supply Store for only $10. Tickets day off the event will be $20. All seating is general admission.

“I know Tennessee football is a BIG deal,” Green stated. “This is one party I'm really looking forward to!”

The event is presented by SUBWAY® restaurants, the Tennessee Army National Guard and Dish Network.

Famous Dave’s BBQ, Domino’s Pizza and Coca-Cola will be on-site vending food and drinks to all in attendance. Tennessee Traditions, the athletic department’s souvenir provider, will also be on site to offer Tennessee apparel including commemorative Big Orange Blast gear provided by local Knoxville business, Threds.

Additional Big Orange Blast partners include the Knoxville News Sentinel, Volunteer TV – WVLT/MYVLT2, WIVK, the Sports Animal and the Knoxville Area Chamber Partnership.

Other activities will include a performance by Knoxville native, Matt Stillwell and a t-shirt promotion from Tennessee Donor Services.

In addition, SUBWAY® restaurants will present the first ever SUBWAY® Ultimate Big Orange Fan Competition. Fans can visit participating SUBWAY® restaurants beginning August 1st and register to participate in the competition. Contestants will be judged on talent, wardrobe and Tennessee-related trivia. The contestant deemed SUBWAY® Ultimate Big Orange Fan will be presented with SUBWAY® restaurants gift cards, tickets for all Tennessee/Florida home games for the 2008-09 sports season and a 42” flat-screen television.

“The ‘Big Orange Blast’ is a great way to kick-off the weekend leading up to the Florida game and celebrate the passion of our loyal fans,” said Steve Early, vice president and general manager of the Vol Network.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be going to the Jason Foundation, a group that is near and dear to Coach Fulmer. Fulmer got involved with the foundation in 1998, when the foundation decided they needed a national spokesperson. Fulmer has been very active in the organization, while serving as their spokesperson and has recruited 36 college and two NFL coaches as ambassadors for the group.

“We are blessed to have great, supportive fans at Tennessee,” said Fulmer. “I think this will be a great event for the community, our team and our university. I am especially pleased that we will be able to help out the Jason Foundation at the same time.”

The Jason Foundation was founded in 1997 in response to a family’s personal grief and deep commitment to saving youths’ lives. Clark Flatt, president and founder of the Jason Foundation, lost his 16 year-old son, Jason, to the silent epidemic of youth suicide and turned his energies toward reducing the number of youth suicides. The Jason Foundation’s mission is to educate young people, parents, teachers and others who work with young people about youth suicide.
