Local charities need your help

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Each year, charity organizations across East Tennessee gear up to give those who are less fortunate a wonderful holiday. And many couldn't do it without your help. Local charities like Knox Area Rescue Ministries are in need of things you can donate to help everyone enjoy Thanksgiving.

Every day more than 400 people eat and sleep at Knox Area Rescue Ministries. "Our needs have skyrocketed, we have more people eating with us daily, we have more people spending the night with us daily," says Mary Beth Ramey, Director of Special Events for KARM.

She says just like everyone else, KARM is facing challenges due to increased food and fuel costs.
And Ramey says this time of year, help from the community is greatly needed. "If you have the means to help out, not only is it a blessing to those who receive it, it's always a blessing to those who give it."

And Ramey says those giving this time of year are usually ones who don't have much to offer.
They are people like Dianna Reynolds and folks in her outreach program at Central Baptist Church of Bearden.

"The people that live there, they struggle themselves. All year long, they give money, as much as they can, every Sunday, and at the end of the year they designate different agencies that they want to give the money to," says Reynolds who came to KARM to make the donation.

For 19 years, Reynolds says 200 dollars is designated to KARM.
Monetary donations are especially helpful because they go to food, bedding, towels and special events. "It is thanksgiving. It is the time to give what you can to help others and we so appreciate that," says Ramey.

Many people in the outreach program with Dianna want to give back to a place that at one time or another has helped them during the holidays.

"Miracles are out there we just kind of have to look for them or recognize when they happen for us," says Reynolds.

Although KARM needs monetary donations, they are always in need of new or gently used blankets, towels and washcloths.
