Police Chase Ends in Crash

Knoxville (WVLT) - The Knox County Sheriff's Department is investigating a crash that sent one woman to the hospital and left one man under arrest.

Volunteer TV's Whitney Daniel has the details.

It began as an automobile chase in the Lonsdale community and ended in a crash on Johnston Street. That's a few miles off interstate 275. When we pulled up, the amount of people gathered around the scene was almost overwhelming. We caught up with a few of those witnesses as they re-hashed what happened.

"We kept hearing a helicopter going around. It is was a police helicopter," witness Lisa Brown said.

"The Sheriff's car was coming down Johnston Street chasing this white car, then it went through the stop sign, come around through the store parking lot and went back down that way," another witness said.

Apparently, the deputy was pursuing the car, but the driver's refusal to stop turned the chase into a crash.

"Then the city police come down this way, and it pulled in front of the car and the car tried to go around and instead of getting around it, it hit the pole," one witness said.

That cut electricity to the neighboring business. KUB immediately arrived on scene to fix it.

"Then I see the police coming up around here, there was like 15 or 20 of them," Brown said.

The whole incident attracted dozens of neighbors to the streets wondering what was going on and how it all started.

"There was about 50 or 60 up there past the railroad tracks," Brown said.

"I just heard people talking that they carjacked that car from some lady," one witness said.

Police arrested a white man while they searched the vehicle's trunk.

"They had his hands behind his back and they had a police officer on either side of him," Brown said.

"And somebody said they took the lady in an ambulance," Brown said.

The crash remains under investigation.
