Community Rallies to Save Kitty Stuck In Storm Drain

Maryville, Blount County (WVLT) - A kitten in Maryville is getting a lot of attention although many people haven't ever seen it.

Volunteer TV's Blount County Bureau Chief Stephen McLamb brings you a look at efforts to save a feline friend stuck in a downtown storm drain.

A Downtown Maryville storm drain is getting a lot of attention. People just look and look because it's one that makes sounds.

"Meow", it's not a sound storm drains often make.

A kitten has found its way in the drain and animal control have been trying for a week to get it out.

"The drain top, of course, is so heavy we had to call in public works to get down inside of it. Once we did that, the cat ran," says Eddie King, Animal Control Supervisor.

Some thought the weekend's rains may have flushed the cat out, but Cody Dietz came by early Wednesday.

"I started hearing a faint meow and decided to pull over to the Texaco and investigate," Dietz says.

He didn't know what to do so he called police.

"It was the three in the morning cat stuck in the drain cop, you know, that came out. Me and him pried at the drain with a crowbar for a little while and realized we weren't going to be able to get it up," Dietz explains.

Animal control is now trying to trap the kitty and the public trying to help.

"We've been putting food down inside the drain and that's maybe why they can't catch it in the trap. It's probably not hungry," says Amy Huskey.

Cody Dietz has made it his mission to get the cat out, after all, he says it could happen to anyone.

"I imagine myself one day being trapped in a metaphoric drain and needing an individuals help and hopefully they would do more for me than just make a phone call," Dietz says.

But after a week, some feel the little kitty likes where he is.

"You know it may have a way that it goes in and out and it's just a favorite spot that it's found," Huskey says.

Animal Control Officer Eddie King says they'll be checking the trap regularly and hopefully the kitten will take the bait and get in the trap so they can get him out.
