Carson-Newman Faculty Vote No Confidence on President

Jefferson City, Jefferson County (WVLT) - The faculty at one of the region's biggest private colleges is expressing its discontent with the school's leader.

The faculty council of Carson-Newman met this morning and came to a resolution of

No confidence on President James Netherton.

The vote passed 129 to 71.

We spoke to Senior Vice President Dr. David Nowell who says this vote is not a request that President Netherton is removed, but it's an expression of the faculty's concerns.

The president did not attend the meeting and Nowell says the meeting was very civil and members of the faculty had a chance to voice their opinions.

Nowell says the vote came about because of a number of issues. He said enrollment was down this year about 40 students from last year. He says there are budget issues, which were not addressed as well as communication concerns. The Board of Trustees has the final decision.

They meet later this month for their fall meeting where Nowell says they will discuss how to enhance the relationship between the faculty and President Netherton.
