Students Cast Ballots

Knoxville (WVLT) - The votes are in, the ballots have been counted and we know the winner of the race for Governor and U.S. Senate, at least in the eyes of some East Tennessee middle school students.

Over one thousand students at West Valley Middle School voted during the "Kids Vote" Campaign Monday morning.

Students say it's a time for them to have their opinions heard. Teachers say it's a great way to teach kids just how important voting is.

"For the longest time, so many years, minorities and genders were discriminated and couldn't vote and just letting them know it's so important and that is what we're giving them the opportunity to do today," says Scotty Hicks, and 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher.

"It's important to vote and you have to make the right choice so you can be heard," says 8th Grader Violet Clark.

And here are the results:

There were a few votes for independents and "Mr. Claxton", a 7th grade social studies teacher got one write in vote, but it looks like Bredesen won the governors race with 483 votes, Bryson got 382 votes.

In the US Senate race Corker gets the victory with 605 votes, Ford got 342 votes.
