Judge Orders Jury Sequestered In UT Rapist Case

Knoxville (AP) -- A Knox County judge has ordered jurors to be sequestered in the upcoming trial of a man suspected in a series of 1997 rapes near the University of Tennessee campus.

Criminal Court Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz cited publicity concerns surrounding the trial of the first of five rape charges against Bruce Warren Scarborough. The trial is to begin Monday.

Authorities tied Scarborough to the crimes nearly five years later in 2002 when a random run through the state's DNA database linked him to the rapes and sexual assaults of three UT students, a high school student and a school teacher.

Scarborough, who was a felon on an attempted sexual assault in Blount County, was required to submit a blood sample in prison in order to get a chance at parole.

The rapist broke into the off-campus homes of his victims while they were alone and asleep. Police said he stalked his victims for years before attacking.
