Judge: Suspect in Bible Theft Case Able To Stand Trial

Maryville, Blount County (AP) -- A judge in Maryville says a man accused of stealing Bibles from area churches and tearing them apart is competent to stand trial.

Carl Clark is charged with two burglary counts, accused of stealing bibles from Broadway Baptist Church and New Providence Presbyterian Church.

Authorities say, beginning in July, people reported finding torn pages of scripture dumped at area churches and other places.

The court is requiring Clark to continue getting mental health treatment and has barred him from the property of any house of worship.

The 53-year-old Clark lives with his parents in Knox County.
