GM Wants To Invest $225m in Spring Hill, Close Plant Temporarily

Nashville (AP) -- General Motors Corporation wants to invest about $225 million in its Spring Hill Manufacturing Plant to renovate the paint shop for future vehicle production.

GM said in a news release Monday that the investment depends on securing an incentive package from Tennessee. It would close the plant about 30 miles south of Nashville for several months.

State economic development officials have been in close contact with GM executives since the company announced a major restructuring last year that included shutting down a production line at Spring Hill.

The company said the renovations will require a temporary layoff of workers beginning in April. GM employs about 4700 hourly workers at Spring Hill.
