Alexander Gets Key Committee Assignments

Washington (AP) - US Senator Lamar Alexander is getting key committee assignments in the new Congress.

He's being appointed to the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Appropriations Committee, which controls the government's purse strings.

According to the Associated Press, the move is designed to make sure the Tennessee Republican runs for re-election in 2008.

Alexander, in his first term, recently considered retiring from the Senate in 2008, but the new assignments make it nearly certain he will run again.

Alexander said the appointments are good for Tennessee because he'll be able to help control federal spending and make sure the state gets its fair share of funds. He also said he'll be able to work on issues he cares about.
