Johnson Said To Be Responding To Wife's Commands

Washington (AP) -- Small but hopeful signs from the senator who had emergency brain surgery.

His spokeswoman says South Dakota's Tim Johnson opened his eyes when his wife asked him to. He also reached out to hold her hand. The senator's two sons have also flown to the nation's capital to be at his bedside. The spokeswoman says the family is "very encouraged" by the signs of progress.

Johnson suffered a brain hemorrhage caused by an uncommon condition that's usually present at birth. He's a Democrat, and his condition has prompted speculation about what might happen to his party's slim majority in the new Senate.

At the White House, Press Secretary Tony Snow calls this "a time to pray" for Johnson's health. Snow says he's leaving it to others to "start doing political calculations."
