Report: GM To Build New Chevrolet Crossover At Spring Hill

Detroit (AP) -- General Motors may build a large crossover vehicle for Chevrolet at the plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, that now builds Saturns.

Industry publication Automotive News says GM will invest $700 million in the plant so it can build the seven- or eight-passenger crossover there. The publication did not say where it got the information.

GM spokesman Dan Flores said Monday the company intends to invest $225 million to renovate the paint shop at the plant and build a vehicle there. But he said no decision has been made on which vehicle.

GM already plans to build three versions of the large crossover at its Delta Township plant near Lansing: the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave. The company needs a factory to build the Chevrolet version.

Flores said the Spring Hill investment is contingent on the State of Tennessee approving an incentive package, and negotiations are under way on that.
