Laura Bush Talks About Her Skin Cancer

White House (AP) -- She says she's a "private citizen," so First Lady Laura Bush says it "never occurred" to her to go public with her skin cancer.

Mrs. Bush had a nickel-size tumor removed from her right shin shortly after the November seventh election.

In an interview aired on CBS' "The Early Show," the First Lady said it was a "very minor" thing.

She says she initially thought it was an insect bite, but when it didn't heal she had it biopsied and the cancer was discovered.

Mrs. Bush says she never felt sick and was able to travel to Asia with the President four days after the procedure.

While she defended her right to keep her medical information private, Mrs. Bush did say that she's glad it's out because it raises awareness of skin cancer.
