Acclaimed Appalachian Author Dies at 86

Asheville, NC (WVLT) - A well-know writer who brought stories about Appalachia to people around the world has died.

Wilma Dykeman was 86-years-old.

She died Friday night in an Asheville, North Carolina hospice.

She gained critical acclaim back in 1955 with her first book, "The French Broad."

Dykemen was the widow of Tennessee poet James R. Stokely.

She is survived by two sons.
