Vehicles Surpass Industry for Biggest Source Of Pollution

Nashville (AP) -- Vehicles and heavy-duty equipment are now responsible for producing more pollution in Middle Tennessee than factories do.

That's according to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Manufacturing industries have been targeted by federal environmental regulations for the past decade.

But strict regulations on the transportation industry are only now catching up.

Middle Tennessee's population boom of the past decade is a factor, with more people living in the region, there are more mobile sources of pollution like cars, trucks and construction equipment.

Quincy Styke, the Deputy Director of the State's Air Pollution Control Division, says more cars and more miles driven equates to more pollution.
